[I remember the first time I saw View No Country. You and I were driving up Highway 410, just south of Woodland, Texas. The air was so dry, we could feel the reflections of last night's sunset in the back of our throats. The sun glimmering through the sparse trees, the leaves were singing hymns. The late summer evening heat got to you, so we stopped at a swimming hole to cool off. We were on the way to visit Nick's Uncle John who lived a few miles down Country Road 4, just north of the Sour Apple Ranch. Tuned into FM 102.7, I’ll always remember the ethereal vocal track as we reached the path too narrow for our truck. I opened your door and took your hand, feeling the impression of the leather wrinkles from the truck seats on your palms. You always sat like that, hands trapped under your thighs, anxious to arrive. Suddenly, we could see through the smoke that had been engulfing the road for miles. Your breath said, “This is the closest thing to heaven I’ve ever seen.” Rolling hills covered in trees, revealing a large lake in the middle of the North Texas desert sprawl, View No Country.]
